Messing With A Southern Girl

Tori as Pip

It seems nearly every album Tori Amos releases nowadays is a concept album of some sort. Her latest, "American Doll Posse," is written from the perspective of four different alter-egos. On the tour supporting this album, Tori appears as one of these alter-egos for the first part of the show, then, after a brief set change, returns as herself for the remainder. Tanya, Caleb, Kim, Brad, and I went to last night's performance in SLC, where we were treated to "Pip," her darkest and most confrontational character.

This show was very different than last time we saw her. Before, it was only Tori and her piano. This time, she had a three-piece band. Even though last time had the "less is more" concept, this time somehow seemed more intimate.

As always, she threw in some classics like "Crucify," "Caught A Lite Sneeze," and "Pretty Good Year," plus a cover of Neil Young's "Heart of Gold." The band had a very full sound, and they played well off each other's energy, including two encores.

To be honest, I've kinda lost interest in Tori's albums over the years, but her live shows never disappoint. She's so cute, and seems so grateful to be performing. And I was grateful to see her.
