Heavy Arms

ABUs & Stripe
Originally uploaded by currtdawg
Technically, I sewed my stripe on Saturday, during which we were in the field training exercise up in Germany. Today was my first day back at work here in Aviano, and not only did I have my stripe on, but it was also my first day wearing the Airman Battle Uniform (ABU).
As for the ABUs, there are a lot of good qualities and a lot of bad. They're virtually impossible to wrinkle, but the material is also heavier and warmer. There are about a billion places to put pens, and it's nice to have a uniform unique to the Air Force. It's pretty comfortable, but this is only my first day, so we'll see how it works out.
As for the stripe, I'm trying not to think about it too much. I don't want to be the guy who looks to see what someone has on their sleeve before talking to them. Lots of co-workers are making a big deal about it, but I just blush and try to change the subject.
With Tech, it's implied that I'll sit behind a desk and tell people what to do, but that's not really my style. I was doing jobs today, and when I went to check on some tanks in the Ammo area, they looked at me like I was crazy. I'm not good at asking others to do what I know I could do myself, but I guess it's something I'm going to have to learn.
Sometimes I feel like I don't really deserve the stripe. But then I think of all the idiots and assholes that still outrank me, and it makes me want to work even harder for the next one.
