This was a relatively rough week at work. I mean, since I started working in my current shop, everything has been lollipops and rainbows; but there was definitely a tense moment or two this week, and I think I handled things pretty well. Not perfect, but still pretty darn good.
Not only was it challenging as far as dealing with people, it was also difficult job-wise. Lots of projects going on, a few of them pretty physical, with even more next week. But I'm looking forward to it.
And when weeks like this one are over, it feels good to breathe a sigh of relief. One of the great things about working in CE is the sense of accomplishment I feel after a hard day's work. It's sometimes arduous and irritating and dirty, but afterward, I can look at my project and say, "I did that."
It also feels good to toss back a pint or two. Or eleven.

Twist and Shout
I'm pretty good at picking my battles, but today at work, somebody upset me, and I couldn't let it go. I argued my point, but he just didn't see it my way. I tried to be diplomatic, and it got me nowhere. I kinda wish I would have just yelled, "Stop being a whiney, little punk-ass bitch and grow up!" But that would have been kind of immature in itself. Maybe it will work itself out, but I doubt it. I avoid confrontation, as it makes me very uncomfortable; but maybe getting out of my comfort zone is what I need in this area. The other night at the ALS graduation, the speaker talked about how being nice to someone may not be what's best for them. Should I assert my authority more frequently? This is something I'm going to ponder for a while.

Put Me In, Coach!
The crew at Rooster's have gotten a team together and joined a softball league this summer. Their second game of the season was tonight down in Bountiful, and I thought it would be cool to go and support them. After all, they've been so diligent at supporting my drinking habit, right?
It was really fun, and I got to meet Tavia's family. (They were a hoot!) Unfortunately, they lost. Like, bad. Regardless, they seemed to enjoy themselves as much as I did, and I just might have to come back on another random Tuesday evening.

Chocolate Cherry
I dyed my hair last night. Nothing drastic. Just put a little red into it. I like to do it in the summer because my hair is so black that it can sometimes look blue in the sun, and I don't want anyone to refer to me as "Milhouse."

The Blue Agave Revenge
Friday was Cinco de Mayo, which, in a way, is kind of like St. Patrick's Day. It's an excuse to drink. And boy, did I.
I've never had tequila before. Ever. But the whole salt-on-the-hand, drink-the-shot, suck-on-the-lime thing was appealing and fun. We started doing shots at 10 PM with the intent to do another shot every half hour. Well, that was until 10:47 when we decided to do the pre-11:00 shot shot. And the 11:09 post-11:00 shot shot. Boy, that stuff really catches up with you.
This is right after the first tequila shot I ever did. John seems to be thinking, "This guy has no clue what he's in for," while I'm just thinking, "Gee, limes are great!"
Surprise!
No, Nick. YOU da man!
I don't know how many shots we did, but the whole bottle of tequila was gone by the time we left for Club Sound, which was around 11:30-ish, I think. And from what I remember, the club was really fun, too.

The Fly Freer
If you've never seen Sigur Ros live, I highly recommend it. They're from Iceland, and they played The Depot in SLC last night, and I still feel like I'm floating. Not because I'm such a huge fan, but just because their music transcends the experience of the average live show.
The opening band was Amiina, four girls who met in college in Reykjavik, and play what I would describe as children's music for adults. They used a very unique instrumentation including a toy piano, bells, and an Apple PowerBook G4 identical to mine. The coolest part was when one of them played the saw. Yes, a saw.
Sigur Ros is such an interesting band. Their art-rock is like the soundtrack to a dream. Singer Jon Por Birgisson sings mostly in falsetto, and the "words" may not even be words at all, but just amient noises that blend with the instruments to create something bizarrely beautiful.
The show itself was a sight to behold. As if the music alone weren't enough to take me into a different universe, the visuals were breathtaking. Slow moving lights and a backdrop onto which was projected seemingly unrelated footage of such random things as electrical line towers, little girls playing, boots marching through puddles, trees blowing in the wind, and radar dishes; but it all came together for a magnificent spectacle. It was an ethereal experience I won't soon forget.

Pounding
Last night was a blur. I vaguely remember tequila shots. Lots of them. I think I had fun, but I can't be too sure because I left my camera at Brian and Ryan's house. I'll post pics as soon as I get it back. Right now, though, I need sleep.

Wild Blue Yonder
I missed Rooster's tonight. (Gasp!) Instead, I went to an Airman Leadership School graduation. Ryan and I were invited by Steven Denny, a friend of ours from Misawa who just PCSd to Hill a few months ago. ALS graduations aren't really the most fun thing ever, but I never pass up an invitation because I was really grateful for everyone who came out to support me when I graduated.
It was a nice ceremony, and it's always fun to see everyone in their blues, as uncomfortable as they are. And part of it makes me want to be all gung-ho Air Force.
The best part of the night was when I locked my keys in my car (Do you feel the sarcasm?), which I've NEVER done before. Luckily, Kyle came and picked us up and brought us home so I could grab the extra key out of my room.
Anyway, tomorrow is going to be a crazy day at work, beginning with PT, so I'm gonna get some sleep. Late...

The Sting
John is a city planner for Layton, and managed to score four free tickets to the SLC Bees game last night. In attendance were John, Ryan, Chad, and me. The Bees played the Las Vegas 51s (their mascot is an alien), so I was a little torn regarding who to cheer for. I picked Salt Lake, and it's a good thing, because they won 9-5.
John drove, and I told him not to let me have more than two beers because I had my PT test this morning, and I did NOT want to be hung over. Well, I ended up having three, but still managed to pass my PT test with flying colours. I think it's funny that I was all worried about my PT test, but the night before I tested for Tech, I got totally shit-faced.

Yellow-bellied
I take things way too personally sometimes. The other day at work, this guy told me he didn't like me. Those were his exact words. "I don't like you." It ruined my day, and now I find myself trying to be extra nice to this guy in order to gain his approval. How ridiculous! I've never given him any reason I know of to dislike me, so he obviously has some kind of personal issue that I can't really do anything about. If it's his problem and not mine, then why am I so upset over it?
This isn't the first time (nor will it be the last) something like this has happened. Every so often, I cross paths with someone with whom I have some sort of personality conflict. Most of the time, I have no clue there's even a disconnect until said person treats me like shit, and I run away feeling wounded and empty. In females, this is called "sensitivity," but in guys, it's just plain "wussiness." I don't like it, and I wish I could find a way to let stuff like this just slide off my back.

Sunny Sunday
The SLC crew met for brunch this morning, which is almost becoming as steady a tradition as hanging at Brian and Ryan's on Friday and Saturdays. After brunch, we went to Sugarhouse Park to toss around the frisbee. The weather was great and we were having such a fun time, so you know I had to take tons of pictures.
The lake was really high today, as shown by this bench that is normally several yards away from the shore line.
After running and throwing and walking around the park, we were really thirsty, and Mikey just couldn't wait for the conventional fountain.
We left Sugarhouse Park to get some ice cream, then decided to head over to Liberty Park to see the drum circle. It's basically a bunch of hippies who gather at the park every Sunday in the summer and play drums and dance around and play hackey sack and so forth. (I also happened to accidentally come across it last October.) It's definitely a great place to people watch. We even gave nicknames to many of them, including this guy, the Hula King.
But all the activities of the day, along with the partying last night, eventually caught up with us, and we decided to call it a day. I'm so ready for next weekend.

Saturday Stimuli
The original plan last night was to go to the Morningwood / Sounds show in SLC, and then meet up with the crew to go out. Due to a few certain circumstances, I skipped the show, and went to dinner with everyone, then to Ryan and Brian's, then to Fetish Night at Area 51, which was as fun as ever. I took tons of pictures just by holding my camera up in the air on the dance floor. Here are a few of the more tame ones fit to publish:
The cool thing about Fetish Night is that anything goes. Tons of different people show up and the only thing they have in common is nobody cares what anyone else does or says or wears. A very free environment. You don't have to dress any particular way, but it's better if you do. Brian and I both wore BDU pants and hats. Mikey wore a collar and a leash. Lawyer Ryan and Bald Ryan wore shiny leather pants. And we were on the milder end of the scale. We see people wearing extreme bondage gear, french maid outfits, carrying around creepy dolls, and a very goth Snow White. I just smile and appreciate the effort.

Work-reation
I went to a cookout this afternoon at the home of Sam Chavez, a guy in our shop. Pretty much everyone from the whole shop was there, plus wives and children. There was lots of beer and food and horseshoes. I had a lot more fun than I thought I would. Here's a few pictures:

Friday Frolic
Last night was FUN! First, Tavia, Mica, Jeff, Matt, Nick, Ryan, and I went to this place in SLC called The Bayou. They had great food and more varieties of beer than I've ever seen. I even got a free t-shirt with my year-long membership.
Afterward, to follow tradition, we went to Brian & Ryan's. I know all these pictures of us hanging out there are probably getting old, but it's so much fun and I want to be able to read about this and reminisce when I'm old and decrepit.
Something interesting about our group is how many Ryans there are. (Well, maybe it's not THAT interesting, but it's kinda odd.) So whenever anyone mentions a Ryan, they always have to signify which one using an adjective. For instance, we have Lil' Ryan, Bald Ryan (shown here on the far left), Lawyer Ryan (second from the right), Roommate Ryan, Gay Ryan, and the list goes on...

Rite of Spring
Even if you love the snow as much as I do, you can't deny that Spring sets off something inside us. Breathing in the warm air, feeling the sun on my face. It's a time of awakening and renewal. Thanks, God.

The Calm After the Storm
After several weeks of rather hard partying, my temperament seems to be getting back to normal. I'm enjoying my evenings at home with a book more often, and even passed up an offer to go karaoke in SLC tonight. Not that I'm going to stop going out altogether. Just more sporadically. All things in moderation, right?
Of course, the tide could shift toward the opposite direction at any given time, and it's doubtful the empty wallet and heavy eyelids at work from these past few weeks will help me learn my lesson.
In other news, Ryan and I have given up looking for a house and have decided to stay in our apartment for another year. This wasn't really the ideal situation for which we were hoping, just because there's so much more freedom living in a house. However, our apartment is nice, affordable, and in a great location. Plus, I could potentially be deploying in September. Ryan's tentative plan is to separate from the Air Force in a year, and I'm getting antsy for orders out of here, so apartment life is what most closely meets our needs. I'm hoping to go back overseas, save up some big money, and be able to buy a house next time I return stateside.
Anyway, I'm going to read another chapter, go through my pre-bed routine, and get some sleep. Sweet dreams.

Child's Play
Perhaps this was something that only went on in my neighbourhood, but when you were little and you were getting ready to play a game of tag or hide-and-seek, did you decide who was going to be "it" with a little game called "potatoes?"
Potatoes was basically when all the players would get in a circle and you'd put your hands together, locking your fingers, and put them in the middle. This was your potato. Then the caller would go around the circle tapping everyone's potato to the beat of a rhyme. If you got tapped, then your potato split up into two smaller potatoes, which was basically two fists. The rhyme would continue until everyone's little potatoes were tapped out and the last person left with a potato was "it." Most of the rhymes asked a question, and whomever got tagged could answer the question, and the second half of the rhyme would continue based on his or her answer.
I was running around the track the other day, and for some reason, all the little rhymes started going through my head. I started laughing so hard at how funny they were. Like I said, I don't know if anyone else every engaged in potatoes, but if you did, I'd love to hear what rhymes you used. Here are a few we used in Morganfield, KY circa 1982.
Eeney, meaney, miney, mo.
Catch a tiger by his toe.
If he hollers, let him go.
Eeney, meaney, miney, mo.
My Momma told me to pick the best one,
And you are not IT!
Bubble gum, bubble gum in a dish.
How many pieces do you wish?
(5)
1, 2, 3, 4, 5
And you are not IT!
Grandma Moses
Sittin' in her rockin' chair
Chewin' on her underwear.
What colour were they?
(Purple!)
P-U-R-P-L-E
And you are not IT!
Engine, engine, number nine
Going down the Chicago Line.
If the train should bump the track,
Do you want your money back?
(YES!)
Y-E-S
And you are not IT!
My Momma and your Momma were hanging out clothes.
My Momma socked your Momma right in the nose.
What colour was the blood except red?
(Green!)
G-R-E-E-N
And you are not IT!
With the weather getting warmer and the days getting longer, it makes me want to get a bunch of people together for a big game of hide-and-seek and remember what it was like as a child to be so fun-loving and care-free during the summer. Those have to be some of the greatest memories ever.

Date With The Night
Karen O of the Yeah Yeah Yeahs is quite possibly one of the greatest rock stars of all time. When she's on stage, it's near impossible to take your eyes off her. She prances around in home made outfits while belting out tunes with swagger and style.
The YYYs played SLC last night, and I was not about to miss this one. I'd been looking forward to this show for weeks, and for good reason. The show was at the U of U campus, and it was outdoors, which made it even better. The weather was perfect and the whole crowd was anticipating a super performance.
The opener was a Brooklyn band called Blood on the Wall. They were a three-piece band with brother-sister singers that played some great bass heavy indie rock with a hint of punk and blues. A good band and great choice for an opening act.
The whole reason the Yeah Yeah Yeahs even exist is because of their live shows. The buzz around them grew in 2001 because of their shows around New York City, so they decided to put out an EP on their own which prompted a major label bidding war. They released their first full-length album, "Fever to Tell," in 2003, and it's definitely a staple of my collection. Every song is a modern punk masterpiece. Their second album, "Show Your Bones," was released last month and I haven't stopped listening to it. They didn't just make a continuation of their first album or freak out and go a totally different direction. They evolved both lyrically and sonically to make a record of emotional depth and dizzying texture.
As for the show last night, I couldn't have asked for more. The entire band was amazing. When they came out, Karen O was wearing a silver leotard that looked like someone had attacked her with the Bedazzler. She strutted around the stage as they played songs from both albums and never lost an ounce of energy. I was pretty close to the front and everyone around me was jumping and dancing as much as we could for being packed in like sardines. And I could swear that when she sang "We'll build a fire in your eyes," she was looking right at me.
The main set lasted a good 90 minutes. For the encore, Karen came back out wearing a body suit painted like a skeleton with fringe and a hood. The whole night was such a great spectacle and I didn't want it to end. This is the reason I go to shows in the first place. "Sometimes I think that I'm bigger than the sound." Definitely.

Double Decades
Sam's 20th birthday was Monday. We celebrated today at Nate and Natsuko's. Natsuko is an amazing cook. I had some wonderful vegetarian lasagna and home made cheesecake that was delicious. That's definitely where I want to have my next birthday.
